I guess my memories of this time is pretty much gone. I get glimpse from time to time but not much remains. Even though I can't remember most it there are glimpses.
Before I start I want to say this. If you have stumbled upon my blog and if you have read a little bit of it and you are asking who is this guy and why is he writing about his life? Is he important? Does he think we care what happened in his life? Well not really... I just wanted to get as many memories down before I forget them. Why am I using a blog and not a piece of paper or typing this on my computer and saving it on my machine. I'll tell you... What I do for a living has taught me that machines break, hang up, and hard drives crash but the internet is a vast storage medium and I hope it will remain for years to come.
Ok... now back to my childhood. Like I said this period is mostly blank. It's a shame you know. None of us can remember much of this time. It would be great if we did because I think this one of the best times of our lives. You owe nobody. Everything is provided for you and to you free of charge. The emotional scares haven't cut trenches in your heart and mind. If your lucky and God has blessed you so, your family, especailly your Mom has you in a protective bubble that nothing can penetrate. And that is what I remember. My Mom had me inside of her will and her love. In her eyes I was perfect. I was beyond reproach. I had done nothing of major consequence to let her down or let my family down.
My sisters... I don't remember much other than what I have been told but they looked after me as though I was one of their baby dolls. If I did something wrong and my Mom was going to punish me they pled my case. They are all older than I and each one filled a special roll in my life. The were my big sisters.
Dad... I don't remember much about him during this time either. I do know that he was a hard worker. He taught school, was the local photographer, taught bus driver training and filled in for bus drivers as needed. I think he also drove the book-mobile. My sisters got to go with him on occasion. I remeber they came back with a toy that when flipped back and forth made a cow sound. I thought that was the coolest thing. I envied them.
I also remeber Dad teahing me to pull corn. If you have never done this, there is a trick to it. The very first one I pulled I pulled right into my eye. You see you have to pull it down horizontal to the ground then twist it and pull. I will looked right at the end of this ear of corn. When I pulled it popped right into my eye. I think this is also the pushing a toy lawn mower behind my Dad as he mowed. He asked me if I liked it and I said yeah. Next thing I know I get to push the real thing. Boy did I get the short end of that blade of grass?
The neighbors accross the street where an older couple. They would baby sit me when Mom worked. They were great. I got to play big people dominos with them and they let me drink coffee. Course I think it was mostly milk and sugar but it didn't matter cause I was being a big person drinking my coffee with them.
Dad taught full time and Mom was a stay-at-home unless she was substituing. It was great being home with her. I didn't go to kindegarden like some of the other kids did. I don't think many did. It was the "thing-to-do" with your kids back then. Most mother were at home with their children
Well I am getting tired. I am not done with this section so I will be editing it soon and adding stuff.

Fred,
ReplyDeleteI knew your parents and was Janet's 5th grade teacher. I was a newly wed when we moved to Hazlehurst. We lived there almost two years, when my husband, Hermon, was transferred in the service to GA. I was looking up Janet on facebook, then decided to futher the search. I loved your family. Your mom and I were great friends when you were little. She taught across the hall from me. We live in Prescott, AZ, where we have built our art business and raised out two sons, Jim and Rob. Please give your mom and Janet my love and my email address. sheiladadams@yahoo.com I would love to hear from them. You keep on writing down your memories. I am doing the same about my husband's art career and our life. I will follow your blog, as often as I can. Best wishes, Sheila Adams
Skeet,
ReplyDeleteDo keep writing your memories cos you see them in a different way than we sisters did. It is good for us to see the 'world' that we sisters bulldozed you through with your eyes.
